I met Prof Martin Aitken last year; he invented the 1st proton magnetometer back in the late 1950s. This is a machine that measures local changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. We still use this type of machine today in geophysics (you may have seen them on Time Team using one. It’s the machine that they walk up and down the field with). This allows us to ‘see’ what is buried beneath the ground (such as the remains of buildings or storage pits) without having to excavate. This is really useful for archaeologists as the information allows them to decide the best places to put their trenches. You can see a picture of what a modern magnetometer/gradiometer looks like here: http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.terradat.co.uk%2Fgeophysics%2Farchaeology%2F&h=0&w=0&sz=1&tbnid=UR4JhdKPjEUHUM&tbnh=210&tbnw=240&zoom=1&docid=1KGfvv-G9HxB5M&ei=ezzNUYLLFKnv0gWR84HQDA&ved=0CAEQsCU
