More permanent dyes use hydrogen peroxide to bleach the natural colour out of your hair. Then ammonia is used to open up pores in the hair shaft, this then allows the chemical compound (making the chosen colour) to bond with the hair and change the colour of it.
In temporary colours the particles in the colourant are really large and sit really close to the surface of the hair, which is why they appear really bright but don’t last as long. If your hair is really dry or brittle, some of the temporary dye may be able to get into the hair making the colour last a little bit longer.
