At the moment I have been mixing different types of ancient glasses and melting them together to see if I can identify a ‘recycling’ pattern. I’m going to then look at the chemistry of Roman glass artefacts to see if can see the same patterns and answer the question of whether the Romans recycled their glass.

I’m also going to stick bits of glass into different types of acid to see how they corrode, so we can then tell what has happened to ancient glasses from different burial environments.

And in a few weeks I’m going to Turkey with my pXRF (thing that looks like a star trek phaser) to use X-rays to analyse the composition of Roman metal slags, ceramics and glass in the field.

I am working on some new chemical reactions to attach a fluorophore (part of a molecule that absorbs and emits light) to some sugar molecules we have made similar to those in your body, we are then going to use them with a fluorescent protein to see how they interact.
