Two things inspired me to become a scientist.

Firstly, I was working as an archaeologist and there was a lot of competition in the job market because lots of people were trained to do my job. So, I decided to retrain and learn some science and from that became an archaeometrist.

Secondly, I got really frustrated at having to rely on someone else to tell me the interesting things about the objects I was digging up. I had to rely on them to know what it was made from, where it came from, how old it was etc. And because at the time I didn’t know any science, I had to rely on their judgement, I had no way of verifying what they were telling me. So I wanted to retrain and learn science (especially chemistry) so I could understand the data and answer those questions for myself.

I wanted to become a scientist because I enjoyed doing experiments at school, everything from grwoing plants to playing with magnets! I had great science teachers and loved reading science books from the library and going to museums

I always enjoyed science but it was only when I studied Medical Microbiology during my course that I really knew I had found my niche.
