In America it is usually called an eggplant, but in the UK and Europe it is an aubergine. Some varieties that were grown in the 18th century were white or yellowish in colour and it has been suggested that maybe that is where the eggplant name came from, because it looked a little bit like an egg or was egg-ish in colour.
