My work doesn’t look at modern cancers, but I have seen some archaeological bone cancers and so the disease has been around for a long time. I hope one day that we do find a cure, but because there are so many different types of cancer, I’m not sure we’ll find 1 cure that works for all of them. Hopefully we will find enough cures to deal with the majority of cancers.

Until recently I was working in radiotherapy physics – using x-rays to cure cancer, and now my main involvement with cancer treatments is in using light, and special creams or drugs called photosensitisers, which enable the cancerous cells to be killed off using light – photodynamic therapy. This is only useful forcertain types of cancer – there are many types which affect many of the organs in the body – treatments are improving, but it may be some time before we find cures for all the different types.

My work at the moment could help biologists understand cancer better, I think we will have much better treatments for cancer in the future, it might not just be a ‘take a pill and you’re better’ type cure but we will definitely not have to be so worried about cancer in the future.

      Hi @georgia…..

If some cancers are caused by infections, which they are (look at HPV) then I guess Microbiology may become more involved in cancer prevention as time goes on.
